Looking for answers: moving forward

  • There must be more to life.

  • How do I move forward from here?

  • Am I on the right path?

  • I don’t want this anymore...but what do I want?

  • What do I need to do to get there?

These are common statements, questions or variations of questions that so many people struggle with for years with no answers. They go on day after day with the same routine. Not necessarily expecting a different outcome but with little or no progress on the very questions that can change their lives. Can move them forward.

Consider these common situations…

People who grew up in an era learning from a role model whose responsibility it was to provide for the family, pay for a home, food and everyday living and now with the pressure to keep up…travel, holidays, cars.

Someone who is successful externally but wholly unfulfilled on the inside. Has all the toys and funds but limited time or feels little joy or satisfaction on a daily basis. Working in an industry where “success” requires living in conflict with your values and beliefs…Making life uncomfortable. Stressing your integrity.

People who give up or pause a career to have a family or who are in a career limited by the environment. People in a relationship that they can’t see a way out of through family ties, financial dependence or fear and uncertainty of what’s next.

Someone leaving the familiarity and consistency of a structured existence…Leaving life in the military and moving into civilian life for example where the same parameters don’t exist. You are no longer important because of your rank, reputation or regiment. People don’t respond or interact with you in the way they used to with common training and experience. You have to find your own way every day.

Finishing a career in professional or elite sports where structure and planning for training, rest and nutrition is all controlled and often assisted by a coach and often shared by a team. The exhilaration and following that comes from being at the top of your game in a public arena.

What’s the answer?

My answers came from working on me. When through circumstance, i was forced into the realisation that not answering these questions had largely landed me where I was and that I didn't have the tools to move forward from that uncomfortable spot, to "fix" it, I needed to find out how and why.

This is a journey that now started, I realise will last the rest of my life. It can be painful and confronting but also opening and rewarding...Not limiting where I want to go with my previous experiences. Being brutally honest with my reality, self-awareness and who I am. Identifying how I'm going to get "there", wherever there is and building a process that doesn't crush my spirits and remove all motivation through anxiety, stress and sheer overwhelm.

I know I'm not the only one and I'm certainly not the first. I read many books written by many more experienced people than me whilst trying to find my answers. I'm sure I would be progressed from where I was if I had continued that approach but I wouldn't be where I am without the help and guidance of a coach.

I don't have your answers. I am not going to tell you that I can fix you or solve your problems. I’m not going to tell you that I can make you succeed in business, life or relationships. I don’t know that. I don’t know you and I don’t know your business and that’s not what my business is about.

What I do know is that I have my answers and I know how I got them and can share that process with you. I am a coach and a person trying to live in this crazy world the same as everyone else. I’ve been in some of the situations above and I had a coach to guide me through finding the answers that I needed. Answers that I either couldn’t find for myself or would cost me a lot following errant paths before I got there. The coaching process was so impactful on me that several years ago, I trained as a coach. I now use my own experiences of being coached, the experiences that I have as a business executive managing a large complex global business, my mindset and performance learnings as a sponsored ultra distance runner and my formal education as a coach to help others find their answers.

What I learnt is, I only have one life and there are lots of people out there who will genuinely help me, support me and guide me. I should take that help, support and guidance but ultimately, I'm still the only person who can make things change and find the right answers for me. Invest in yourself and your future now...What are you waiting for?
